Spring Term 1963
- 2 Jan: School premises entered and film and film-strip projectors, plus other electric equipment stolen.
- 5 Jan: Party of staff and boys visit Stratford for performance of “Magic Flute”.
- 8 Jan: School commences – 362 boys on registers. Mr A H Watkins joins the staff.
- 9 Jan: Debate at Town Library (Hackwood Society) v Girls’ High School.
- 10 Jan: Old Boys’ dinner – about 50 attended.
- 14 Jan: Choir practice for performance of Messiah.
- 23 Jan: Visit of HMI Miss Livery to inspect kitchens and dining hall.
- 6 Feb: School chess team defeat Wobaston 5-1 in W’ton Schools League.
- 7 Feb: School chess team defeat Joseph Leckie 3½-2½ in league match.
- 25 Feb: Railway Society outing to Leeds and Doncaster. Field Club outing to Clent Hills.
- 4 Mar: Showing of “Henry V” by Educational Film Co.
- 10 Mar: Announced D J Madeley (school goalkeeper) chosen for FA Schools Week at St John’s College, Oxford, April 7-13th.
- 16 Mar: Boys take part in St Nicolas (Wednesbury Civic Choir).
- 20 Mar: Party to B’ham Rep (Titus Andronicus).
- 22 Mar: PA Dance – about 80-90 attend. Staff and boys in St Matthew Passion.
- 23 Mar: Field Club outing to Wyre Forest.
- 4 Apr: First night of school play, “The Government Inspector”
- 5 Apr: Choir rehearsal in Parish Church of “Messiah”/
- 9 Apr: Performance of Handel’s “Messiah” at Parish Church. Collection just less than £20 for Church of England waifs and strays.
- 10 Apr: Boys with Mr Mason go to Talland Bay for fortnight’s camp. End of Term. Mr Trundle leaves for post at Mansfield.
- 30 Apr: Railway Society outing to Swindon and Eastleigh.
Summer Term 1963
- 1 May: School starts with 357 boys on roll.
- 10 May: Fire in caretaker’s storeroom.
- 11 May: J Southall won 100 yds (10 sec dead), 220 yards (23.8 sec) and long jump (19’11.75″) in North West Midlands meeting at W’ton.
- 14 May: Russian A-level orals.
- 15 May: Interview held for Head of History department. Mr J Clifford appointed.
- 17 May: Cycling Proficiency Tests held.
- 24 and 31 May: Interview parents and boys for Sept entry. [I was there!]
- 31 May: Boys leave for Whitsun camp at Teddersley Park.
- 8 Jun: Tennis match v West Brom. Lost 11-7.
- 14 Jun: Interview for Biology post – Mr D W Dearne appointed.
- 22 Jun: Staffordshire County Athletic Sports held at Aldersley Stadium. Intermediate (15-17) 100 yds – 1st J Southall 10sec, 220 yds – 1st J Southall 23.4sec, U14 100 yds, 2nd R Edwards 10.9sec, U15 Long Jump 4th Williams N 17’4½”.
- 9 Jul: House plays and Sixth Form Revue.
- 11 Jul: Swimming Gala held in Town Baths. Internal audit by County official. Open and 4th form doubles finals won by Lunn and Mould, Darby and Stanley.
- 12 Jul: Road safety tests. Mr Ede’s retirement dinner and presentation.
- 13 Jul: Sports Day. Southall wins 100yds and 220yds at West Midlands.
- 15 Jul: Open and Fourth Form singles – Powell, Fowkes (?)
- 16 Jul: Commemoration Service held in St Paul’s Church, visiting preacher Rev Brian O’Gorman.
- 17 Jul: Swiss party leaves.
- 18 Jul: Southall goes to Chelmsford for AAA championships.
- 19 Jul: End of term. Mr Ede, Mr Mason and Mr Jones leave the staff, also French Assistante Mlle Paoli.
- 22 Jul: German party leaves.
- 14-28 Aug: Camp at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Settle.
Autumn Term 1963
- During the holidays two continental trips were arranged and the annual camp at Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Southall was again 3rd in the Schools National finals held at Chelmsford.
- Term started with 377 boys on the registers [including ME] (with possible 2 or 3 others returning) of whom 74 are in the Sixth Form (necessary to make 3rd Year Sixth of 25). Two new staff commenced duties: Mr D C Dearne and Mr Jones.
- 3 Sep: Commencement of term. Staff and house meetings.
- 4 Sep: Cycling Proficiency results – 15 passed.
- 7 Sep: Field Club to Cannock Chase.
- 17 Sep:Announced K Whitehouse as Head Boy. Party (parents, staff and VIth form) to B’ham Rep to see Brecht play.
- 25 Sep: Visit of Dr Morris for leavers’ medicals.
- 27 Sep: Geographical outing to Shropshire.
- 30 Sep: Alan Dangerfield offered place at St John’s, Cambridge.
- 6 Oct: C R Burns offered place at St John’s, Cambridge.
- 16 Oct: Lunn offered place at Keble, Oxford.
- 19 Oct: Field Club to Wyre Forest.
- 6 Nov: Cello recital given by Miss Hooton (Miss Winifred Evans on piano). Visit to Stratford by 41 staff, parents and boys to see Richard III.
- 9 Nov: Field Club outing to Wren’s Nest, Dudley.
- 20 Nov: School closed for County Secondary Selection tests.
- 21 Nov: Interviews for kitchen staff.
- 28 Nov: Speech Day – Prof Robb guest of honour.
- 17 Dec: Carol Evening – solos by Mr Davis and Mr Pooler.
- Rehearsals for school play (Macbeth) held during holidays.
